Match Report - 03 Nov 2012, Actonians Netball Club A Team lost to Capital NUNS
1st quarter 10-6 (winning)
2nd quarter 18-14 (winning)
3rd quarter 24-28 (losing)
4th quarter 27-37 (lost)
Billed as our “toughest match of the season”, prior to our game Capital Nuns hadn’t scored fewer than 63 goals (up to 79!), and no opposition had scored more than half their points. Well we changed that!
We had a good warm up using the “square” drills, and the whole team went out to win. Dani and Sarah were creating space and finding our shooters, who were on good form (Caz 71%, Claire 75%). Defence were pressuring every pass.
We won the first half.
In the second half things changed. Capital Nuns came out to win and we lost our focus. We were put off by their increase in physical contesting, and didn’t find the mental and physical strength to fight back.
We had won the first half by making good decisions, playing our game and using the options available rather than forcing the ball. In the second half we were tired and started forcing the ball to doubled players, or players who were not clearly free of their opponent, and this lost the game for us.
Based on the first half performance, we should have won, so we could be a little disappointed with ourselves. However, there were lots of positives to take from the game and if we work on mental and physical endurance we can be unbeatable in our divisions!
Notes on oppo for next time: we gave POM to their WA, who (along with GA) was very strong and created a lot of chances. Closing down their attacking 1-2 from the centre pass is crucial. Think they were missing a few key players who may reappear next time, particularly in defence, and also possibly a different GS (this one was accurate but I don’t think would have scored 79 in a game?!)
Quote for the match:
“When the going gets tough, the tough get going” (Billy Ocean)
(based on that first quarter performance I’m going to tell you all that every game is our toughest of the season ha ha!)
Things to work on in training:
Pushing ourselves and each other. To quote Kath “if you don’t push each other how are you going to do it in a match”. We need to prepare ourselves for a more physical level of play with lots of contesting so let’s be tough on each other in training – we all know we’re nice people off court so don’t worry about it!
